What are F-gases?

F-gases are strong fluorinated greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming if released into the atmosphere. Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), Perfluorocarbons (PFCs) and Sulphur Hexafluoride (SF6) are all types of F-gas. HFCs are the most common type of F-gases and are mainly used as the refrigerant in air conditioning and commercial refrigeration systems.

What is F-gas regulation?

The UK and the European Union have a duty to contain, prevent and reduce emissions of F-gases as part of their obligations as signatories to the Kyoto Protocol. The EU’s F-gas Regulation No 842/206 came into force on 4 July 2007. The legal responsibility for compliance with this regulation lies with the equipment operator.

What does this mean for me?

If you have air conditioning or refrigeration equipment, you must ensure that all leakage of F-gases is prevented. You must also ensure that any leakages are repaired as soon as they are found. The frequency of inspections depends on the weight of refrigerant in the circuit, and can be anything from every three months to every year. If any leaks are found and repaired, the regulation also states that the system must be checked again for leakage within one month, to ensure that no further leaks are present.

What can I do?

You do not need to panic - we can arrange all testing by certified personnel to ensure that you comply with the F-gas regulations. We will advise you of the schedule for testing that your equipment falls into, and arrange for those tests to be done. We can offer this testing as part of your maintenance contract. See our Planned Preventative Maintenance page for more information on maintenance contracts.

Are there any other benefits?

The Enhanced Capital Allowance (ECA) scheme is a key part of the Government’s programme to manage climate change and provides businesses with enhanced tax relief for investments in equipment that meets published energy-saving criteria. This means that if you decide to replace your existing system with an energy-efficient system, you can benefit from enhanced tax relief and also minimise the impact on the environment by recycling up to 95% of the redundant equipment with our unique recycling service.

Start your replacement programme now and benefit from:

  • Lower CO2 emissions
  • Higher energy efficiency
  • Lower running costs
  • Lower maintenance costs
  • Higher reliability from the product
  • Tax benefits through the ECA.
